What you need to survive the season

Published on 15 June 2018

There’s no avoiding it: we’re heading straight for the depths of winter – the part where electric blankets and giant bowls of pasta feel most necessary. Aside from carbo- loading, bracing Melbourne’s harsh elements at this time of year also call for reliably warm clothes to take you through the season.

If you haven’t already hoarded the necessities – we’re talking thermals, puffers, knits, beanies and boots – now’s the time to do it. Stores are already discounting left, right and centre in the run up to the end-of-financial year, so now’s the time to bag a bargain on that new jacket you’ve been thinking about.

Once considered super dorky and available exclusively in either black or highlighter neon, puffer jackets have evolved to become winter’s most fashionably practical purchase. Take your pick from a rainbow of shades, from soft muted pastels, to brighter ski bunny prints and colours. Whatever style you pick, you can count on a puffer as the ultimate winter defence.

Winter is the opportune time for comfort-first clothing, both inside the house and out. If your winter pyjamas are looking a little ragged, treat yourself to a new set of flannel PJs, or a fluffy gown that’ll quickly become your new best friend. Don’t be afraid to continue snuggling up in hoodies and crew necks outside the home either – casual cool is the new dressed up.

Melburnians should never underestimate the power of the scarf or beanie on those extra cold days. Rugging up from top to toe for the footy is a must, but as we get closer to July it’s an increasingly necessary step just for leaving the house every morning.

Layering all of your warmest items can be make you feel uncomfortable and bulky at the best of times. The solution? Cut down on the three different long sleeves you’ve been piling on and replace your innermost layer with a good thermal. Seal the deal with a quality woollen knit and an outer jacket if necessary and you’ll be set to keep in the heat.
